California is the nation's leading producer of garlic
California's garlic producers excel at meeting the needs of America's garlic-lovers. Our farmers produce over 90% of the garlic grown in the U.S. Garlic in California is grown both for use fresh, and to be dehydrated for use later. California produced more than 255,000 tons of garlic in 2017
Garlic was first introduced into the U.S. in the 1700's, but had to wait until the 1920's before becoming popular. Thought to have originated in Asia, garlic was considered a medicinal plant, and recent research into the health benefits of garlic show strong antibiotic and antioxidant effects and potential for reducing cholesterol and blood pressure
California's garlic farmers are careful to provide the right amount of water at the right times to ensure a healthy plant. California's garlic farmers are among the most efficient in the world, producing more crop per drop than many of our international trading partners.
